Have you ever seen a discussion taking place in sign language and thought to yourself, “that is SO fascinating!?!” Well I have. From the time I was a child I was always intrigued by the motions and silent understanding. I am no expert, but as a learner of ASL I would love to pass a little of that on to your students! Sign language is a beautiful and complex language all its own, with unique syntax and phonology. There has always be a misconception that sign language is English with the hands. Students will learn that this is actually not at all true. In this course, we will be following along with ASL (American Sign Language) curriculum learning such things as commonly used vocabulary, greetings, questions, common phrases, fingerspelling, communication and a simple understanding of deaf culture and etiquette, etc… We will focus on learning to speak as well as recognize the language. This course can also be modified to fulfill a foreign language requirement as ASL is an accepted language. This will be a super fun, literally “hands-on” course that will teach your students an invaluable skill that will last a lifetime!
