Class Description

Welcome to Speech! In this introductory class, we will cover the four main types of speeches: persuasive, informative, reflective, and creative. Students will learn techniques to manage their nerves, create visual aids, and practice speaking up in their communities. We will learn about verbal and nonverbal communication.
This class will be lighthearted and fun, with weekly learning games to warm up.

The homework, estimated at 0-2 hours per week, is completely optional at the parents’ discretion. It is my strong recommendation that students practice speeches and/or create small visual aids (such as notecards) at home so that they feel more confident on Fridays to present. Additional optional homework will be confidence-building exercises such as: calling a business to make an appointment or ask about inventory, ordering for the entire table at a restaurant, getting rejected on purpose (ex: ask for free item), call someone and carry the conversation for 2-3 minutes, etc.

Although not everyone will grow up to be a professional public speaker, every one of us will speak in public. My hope is that this foundational class grows alongside our students throughout the years and gives them the courage and confidence to speak up boldly for themselves and others.

I look forward to an amazing year at BVC!
