Class Description:
New year, new books!!
Reading with Reason is a program designed by The Center For Literary Education that is comprised of great, entertaining children’s literature and an approach to analyzing it that will encourage good reading comprehension in even the youngest student. Based on the Teaching the Classics approach to reading, Reading with Reason involves working with stories at or below a student’s reading level. While the volumes studied are appropriate to the reading level of a specific age group, they can be applied to grades at their reading level and up. The Socratic study method learned will enable children to ponder well- designed questions about structure, style, context, and theme in every story they read. Stories will be read aloud in class and thoroughly discussed and occasional Story Charts will graphically outline the major structural and thematic element of the story. Short author biographies for each title will also be covered. As time allows, art will be added to underscore the illustrator’s medium of choice.
This year’s titles include:
* Brave Irene by William Steig
* Sam, Bangs and Moonshine by Evaline Ness
* All the Places to Love by Patricia MacLachlan
* Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson
* Fishing in the Air by Sharon Creech
* Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild! by Mem Fox
* The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant
* Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox
•Excerpts from The House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne
