Class Description:
“One Voice” is the more advanced ensemble of two choirs in the “MUSIC MAKERS” choir program. Through the development of proper vowels and singing techniques, this choir will focus on sounding as “One Voice”, especially while singing in harmony. Students will also develop skills of reading music through sightreading, rhythm, and warm-up exercises in a fun and engaging environment. We will be challenged to perform music of various styles at four concerts during the school year: Fall Concert, Christmas Concert, Winter Praise Concert, and “Big Show” Pops Concert in April. Songs will include, but not be limited to, art songs, folk songs, classic choral anthems, spiritual songs and/or hymns, pop and/or broadway selections. Come ready to work hard and be amazed how we will sound like “One Voice” by the end of the year!

About Shawna Furman

Ten years ago, Shawna Furman, established and directed the "Music Makers" choral program at the Brazos Valley Co-op. After a few years of being away, she made a comeback to the Co-op in the 2016-2017 school year. Shawna holds a Bachelor's of Music degree with an All-Level Teaching Certification from Abilene Christian University. After teaching several years as both a choir and band director as well as an all-level elementary music teacher, she felt a calling to music ministry. She attended grad school at Baylor University where she earned a Masters of Music Ministry. She then served for seven years as a music minister at Waco First United Methodist Church, but once she became a mother, she made the move from music ministry to children's ministries. For the past decade, she has led children in the development of their faith by serving as the Director of Children's Ministries at Woodway First United Methodist. In this venue, she also leads children's choirs and chime choirs. In addition to this, she continues to teach private voice and piano students as she has done for over 22 years. She is happily married to her wonderful and devoted husband, Blaine. Together, they find tremendous joy raising their two children, Kaylee and Weston.
