Class Description:
Chapter Chat seeks to equip students with the tools necessary to read a book properly and well. Students will learn reading strategies, literary elements, and literary techniques so that they may learn to engage with a narrative text and truly make it their own. Chapter Chat is intended to be a place where young readers become increasingly capable readers, taking on somewhat challenging texts so that they might become more fully equipped to tackle progressively formidable titles in the years to come.

In Chapter Chat: Fantastic Adventures we will read six classic books featuring imaginative journeys to develop our reading skill set. We will spend around 5-weeks on each book. A reading schedule will be outlined ahead of each unit so students can remain, literally, on the same page. Students must have their own copy of each book we will read (listed above in Required Materials or Books) since they will do most of their reading at home. Students must also bring their copy to class each week as we engage together with the text. Through strategy-based reading journals, book discussions, and fun projects we hope to emerge from the course with a group of motivated, confident readers ready and anxious to take on any narrative that comes their way.

* Students will be writing in their copy of The Hobbit as we end the year with our most challenging text and practice the skill of marking a book.
