Class Description:Using the Write Shop elementary program and a variety of crafts, activities, and books, my goal is for your student to learn to
    * Plan the main ingredients of a story before beginning to write.
    * Learn to ask who, what, when, where, and why?
    * Learn to use different graphic organizers.
    * Write entries in a personal journal.
    * Describe an object, a person, and a place.
    * Write a nonfiction article.
    * Write a book report.
    * Learn to use research to write a short report.
    * Using a dictionary to help improve writing and spelling.
    * Identifying and choosing describing words.
    * Summarizing contents of familiar books.
    * Collecting research facts about a topic.
    * Use a simple self-editing checklist.
Each of these is designed to help your student gain confidence in the writing process.  Even at this level, if your child is reluctant or not able to write on his/her own, you’re encouraged to let them dictate their stories to you.  As his/her skills develop,they will learn to help more and more with the actual writing. For a more advanced child, extra challenges will be encouraged.

Teacher Information:
 Silvia has homeschooled for 16 years and has graduated two, with three more still at home.  This is her 7th year to teach at Brazos Valley co-op.

Additional Comments: Most work will be done in class, though there will be occasional outside assignments or times when children will need to finish outside of class, especially if they are still at the dictation level. I will always email parents when this occurs.
While the materials fee covers all copies and most of the crafting supplies, I may ask for a student to bring in an old magazine, photos,empty box, etc.
