Class Description: Playing games CAN make you smarter! (see http://www.championshipchess.net/research.html for proof!) In this class, we will be learning and playing chess and many other brain-developing games. All games are selected to develop math and logic skills, language arts ability, or factual knowledge. They are also specially selected to be fun!
A typical class includes a warm-up game, a beginning chess lesson, and free play from a selection of other games. (The free play games will be rotated so students can practice a variety of skills.) Students who already play chess will also enjoy this class. They will be given opportunities to learn by playing games as well being taught popular series of chess moves such as the “Queen’s Raid”.
In addition to chess, we will play games like:
• Bananagrams
• Apples to Apples Kids
• Mastermind
• Blokus
• SET
• Art Memory
• Scrambled States of America 2 card game
• Brain Box
• Scramble Jr.
• Corners (a math game)
To accommodate varied abilities, games will range from those that require no reading to games designed for 9 and up. From these games, students will be able to choose one that is appropriate for their grade and abilities. Older students are welcome to choose games from the older “Brain Games” class selection as well.
Teacher Information: Joy Howard first taught as a public school teacher. She is now in her 6th year of homeschooling and 3rd year at the Brazos Valley Co-op.
