Research Paper and Essay Writing

Tuition: $200.00 per year, payable in monthly installments of $25.00 OR $180.00 per year payable in two semester payments of $90.00

Maximum Class Size: 15

Class Time: 4th hour (12:20 - 1:15)

Estimated homework: 3 to 4 hours per week

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of grammar and spelling.  Previously enrolled in a Jr. High or High School level writing class at a co-op or successfully completed a semester of writing lessons at home last year.


Required Materials or Books:

  • MLA Handbook
  • Microsoft Word application on home computer.

First semester: Students will learn how to choose a topic for a research paper, write a thesis sentence and outline, conduct research,  and write a rough draft.  Each student will be encouraged to choose a topic of personal interest, so that the writing process will be enjoyable.  Rough drafts will be checked and returned to the students for revisions.  The final research paper will be 6-8 pages long and documentation will be in the MLA format.

Second semester:  Students will sharpen their essay writing skills with opportunities to write essays for college applications, scholarship forms, and job applications. Additionally, we will work on more college preparation skills such as writing essay answers for tests.


Teacher Information:

Anne graduated from Austin College with a B.A. in English.  She has worked as a proof-reader and copy editor for 12 years.  She has been homeschooling for 16 years.  Her daughter, Sarah, is a Tartan Scholar at MCC and Benjamin and Rebecca are both homeschooled high school students.

My family and I live and work on a 3rd generation cattle ranch near Marlin.
