This is the 1st hour of a 2-hour Unit Studies class for Kindergarteners and 1st graders.  The theme of the year is Habitats of the World.  We will be learning about pets, farms, cities, swamps, the arctic, oceans, caves, mountains, prairies, rainforests, and many, many more habitats!  This 1st hour (4th period) will have a Science focus (with some Math and Geography as well) and the 2nd hour (5th period) will have a Literature focus (with some Art, Drama, Music, and Language Arts as well).

An example would be studying oceans. The 1st hour we would learn the locations of the oceans in the world, do hands-on experiments learning about the tide and the effects of salt in the ocean, read the book Somewhere in the Ocean and then sing the song, do a classroom graph on the various sizes of ocean animals, etc. The 2nd hour we would still be learning about oceans, but we would read the books Swimmy and A House for a Hermit Crab, make an ocean mobile, sing the song Down by the Shore, answer some ocean riddles, and create a class big book called "Starfish, Starfish, What Do You See?"

Our desire is to provide a topical, hands-on, multi-disciplinary approach to learning designed with 5- to 7-year-olds in mind. The order and flow of the activities will be customized, tailored to the short attention spans of this age group. We all love teaching early childhood and are very excited about offering these classes at co-op.

The classes will go hand in hand, but it is NOT a requirement to take both of them.  We completely understand that everyone's schedule and needs will vary.
