  • Beginning Public Speaking by Teresa Moon (supplied by teacher)

“The fear of speaking is greater than death… Only five percent of the people in the world have the confidence to speak to an audience…Who will those five percent be when our children reach adulthood?...Remember, no matter what your children do when they become adults, they will be required to communicate.” Jeannie Fulbright highlights just how important it is to have developed our communication skills. (See www.jeanniefulbright.com/PublicSpeaking.html for more details on Speak UP!)

In this course you child will have the opportunity to learn, practice, and build important communication and public speaking skills. We will also learn about being effective listeners and giving positive and constructive feedback.

During class students will play fun verbal games, participate in speaking activities and present prepared speaking assignments. The genres of speech that will be covered are dramatized readings, performing memorized pieces of literature, humorous interpretation, original oratory, impromptu speeches, persuasive speeches, dramatizations and expository speeches. Approximately every 4 weeks, students will prepare one of these speech assignments to share with the class.
