Students will discover Texas History in a uniquely homeschool-friendly way! Each month we focus on a different chronological period in our state's history beginning with Native Texans, Explorers, Missions and Colonies through Independence, Statehood, and Industrialization. Geography and government are included along the way.

During the first week of each month, students will read the narrative overview of that period and complete a reading guide to prepare for our (sometimes lively) class discussions. They will also have the opportunity to choose a project from a very diverse idea file of unit studies and related books. These are presented at the end of the month. In between, we enjoy many class activities that let them experience history as an adventure!

Teacher Information:

I did NOT enjoy history as a student, mostly because it was taught as a "dead" subject. I learned to enjoy it as I realized that history is His-story--the evidence of God working out His plan among men. I wanted my children to enjoy all the benefits of hands-on learning, real-life stories, and field trips. But when I looked for a curriculum to use for Texas History, I couldn't find one designed for the way homeschoolers like to learn...so I wrote it! Discover Texas was the fruit of that effort.

The 2006-2007 school year marked the first time I attempted to teach history to a large group, but I absolutely loved it! Since this was a year when the Texas Legislature was in session, we capped off our study with a grand field trip to the THSC Capitol Days government seminar. We will have to find a different field trip next year (since the Legislature only meets every other year), but since we live in the middle of a huge field trip opportunity, the only difficulty I anticipate is in narrowing down the choices!
