History for the Classical Child - The Story of the World Volume 4 - The Modern Age


Teacher:  Susan Price and Rhonda Bunce

Tuition:  $160.00 per year, payable in monthly installments of $20.00

Materials Fee (due at registration):  $20.00 to help defray the cost of supplies used in hands-on activities.

Grades:  2nd/3rd...older siblings are also welcome up to 7th grade

Minimum Class Size:  12 students

Maximum Class Size:  16 students

Class Time: 4th (12:10-1:05)

Required Materials:

  • Student Pages for Story of the World Volume 4- Modern Times. This is available at www.peacehillpress.com for $11.95. This will include all maps, games, flags, timelines, and other consumable pages from the Activity Book in loose leaf form.  Students will need these pages for the first day of class, so please order in advance.
  • 3 ring binder for student pages
  • folder with pockets and brads

What do the following things have in common?
  • With your own hand-made 'globe' and a flashlight, discover how then sun never set on the British Empire.
  • With toys for cargo and skateboards for boats, navigate the fall line of a river and understand locks and canals.
  • As a class, recite portions of the Gettysburg Address wearing Abraham Lincoln's hat.
  • Make and wear your own Pikelhaube (German spiked helmet).
  • Make a volcano, and discover what happened to Krakatoa.
  • Discover how outlaws lived by making your own armor or creating a wanted poster.
  • Invent your own telephone.
  • Create your own country's flag.
  • Play the investing game to learn about the stock market.
  • Build your own torpedo.
  • Make a Bedouin Weaving.
  • Create your own passport.
  • Use math to discover how inflation works.
  • Plant your own victory garden.

All of this is just the beginning of a hands-on approach to history. Along with the story-telling of Jim Weiss, map work, additional history reading and other related literature, time-lining, out-lining, and/or oral summaries, your child will learn about history around the world from the time of Queen Victoria's Empire to the end of World War Two.

This class will be generally geared towards 2nd/3rd graders, but older siblings studying this time period may also be welcome with permission from the teacher.

Teacher information:

Susan Price is a homeschooling mom of three. She loves reading, teaching, and learning about history from an interdisciplinary approach. She believes that using math, science, art, writing, geography, great related literature, etc. to explore history, can make it memorable and meaningful even for young children. She has taught her own children Story of the World Volumes I, II, and III. She has also taught 2nd and 3rd graders at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church for many years. She also teaches piano, and enjoys studying great literature.

 

Rhonda Bunce is a homeschooling mom of 3.  She is a teacher by heart and by trade.  She taught 2nd grade in the public schools before having children. She really enjoys the primary grades and loves picture books, hands-on activities, and anything dramatic.  This is her 2nd year to teach for the Brazos Valley Co-op.
