Salvete, amici Latinae!

Latina II is so fun and interesting!  It is amazing to see where so many of our English words have originated.  This class is a continuation of Latina Christiana I, however, it goes faster than the first course.

We will continue the study of Latin grammar. Students will review the 200 vocabulary words from the first course and learn 200 new vocabulary words and many of their English derivatives. They will learn all five declensions, four conjugations, three tenses, and prepositional phrases. They will also memorize several selections from the early church, one or two Bible verses in Latin, 19 more Latin sayings, and two more songs.

If there is enough interest, we can also go through the Memoria Press Latin Book of Roots. This book coordinates with the vocabulary from Latina Christiana I. It goes a little deeper with English derivatives than just mentioning them in the lesson. Students do weekly exercises dealing with a more comprehensive list of derivatives. This is a good book for a child who loves to study new words. It's also good training for standardized testing. It will help students learn to decipher meanings of unfamiliar words. This is an optional text. I will take a survey of interest this summer after I have a class roster.

As in Latina I, we will incorporate recitations and games to aid in memorization. After taking this class students will be well prepared for advanced Latin study, if so desired, and will have an advantage in their study of English vocabulary and grammar as well as a good foundation for studying Spanish or French. I strongly recommend using a thorough English grammar curriculum such as Rod & Staff or A Beka alongside this Latin course. It will help your student understand the Latin grammar better and vice versa.

The first five lessons of Latina II review all material from Latina I. Students will need to review Latina I material periodically throughout the summer to make class review go more quickly and smoothly. Students can expect to spend at least 30 minutes per day, three days per week on homework to master the material. I'd love to have your student in my class. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
