Junior Master Gardener


Teacher:  Janet Graham  470-2100

Tuition:  $160.00 per year payable in monthly installments of $20.00

Materials Fee (due at registration):  $25.00

Deposit Due at Registration:  $20.00

Grades:  3rd-5th

Minimum Class Size:  8 students

Maximum Class Size: 14 students

Class Time: 6th hour (2:10-3:05)

Required Materials:  Basic gardening supplies: gloves, hat, etc. Each child will receive their own Junior Master Gardener handbook (covered in materials fee) to be used during class time. It features eight chapters of independent, discovery learning activities for elementary-aged youths. Each child will also receive a JMG T-Shirt !!

In the Junior Master Gardner Level one class, children can get involved in exploring their world through meaningful activities that encourage leadership development, personal pride and responsibility, and community involvement. Youth involved in the program develop critical thinking skills, and the ability to identify community concerns and take action to address them through individual group projects. We will also cultivate a connection to children's literature gardening by using garden and ecology-themed children's books. Examples include: Linnea in Monet's Garden, The Giving Tree, The Lotus Seed.

* Use peanut butter/chocolate chips/cereal to learn about soil aggregates...

* Find out how plants clean water...

* Create your own ethnic vegetable garden.. and more!

The class will conclude with each child receiving certification as a Junior Master Gardener.  (award ceremony)

Teacher Information:

Janet Graham is a homeschool mom who loves the dirt! (outside of course) She is currently enrolled in a Master Gardener's program and will receive her Junior Master Gardening Teacher Specialist certification on April 25th at Texas A&M University. This is her 1st year to teach at the Brazos Valley Co-op.
