This Apologia Chemistry course will be using the text Exploring Creation with Chemistry: 2nd Edition. This is a first-year high school chemistry course that will give your student a firm foundation of knowledge in chemistry. After completing and understanding this course, your student will be well prepared for a challenging college level chemistry course. Topics include: significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure and more. Algebra I is a prerequisite for this course. All of the reading will be completed at home prior to class. Class time will be used for experiments and discussion of the reading material. Tests will be taken at home, but will graded by the teacher. Students will receive a syllabus outlining the reading assignments, experiments and tentative test dates. A lab notebook will be kept to document experiments. The study of chemistry helps us understand and appreciate the amazing way everything God created works together. The study of atoms and molecules and the way different substances react with each other reveals an amazing design, even at the smallest level of life. We will be performing experiments in almost every class. The experiments will bring chemistry to life for your student. They will experience first hand the logic, order and amazing complexity that exists throughout God’s Creation. Each student will need to obtain their own textbooks and be prepared to begin reading before the first class. Teacher Information: Rebecca Baker has an AAS in Chemistry. She is a mother of two, 5 year old daughter and 13 year old son. She has been Mission Friends Director at her home church for the past two years in addition to teaching 2nd grade Sunday School and Bible Drill for 4-6 graders. |
